A 180-kilogram
turtle named Yoshi has excited scientists, who tracked her remarkable journey
halfway around the world after she was released from 20 years in captivity.
Key points:
- Scientists have tracked a loggerhead turtle from South Africa to the West Australian coast over the past two years
- Scientists think Yoshi may have been hatched in Australia, and she is returning home
- An aquarium in Cape Town believes it's the first recorded movement of a sea turtle between Africa and Australia
It's believed the
loggerhead turtle may be Australian, after she made a determined
37,000-kilometre swim across the Indian Ocean to a turtle nesting site on
Western Australia's Pilbara coastline.
Scientists, who
began tracking her journey from Cape Town two years ago, believe Yoshi may have
wanted to return to her original hatching site to breed and nest.
Sabrina Fossette,
a research scientist from WA's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and
Attractions said it was very exciting.

Butter Tarts
Canadians are surprised when they discover that not all nations have (or know about) butter tarts, which is a real shame because of their complete and utter awesomeneity (you can only write "awesome" and "awesomeness" so many times before you start making up words.)
Flavour-wise, butter tarts are similar to pecan pie but contain raisins instead of pecans. Purported to come from a Scottish town called Ecclefechan, butter tarts and their amazing taste eclipse any interest in their murky origins.
(Also, take it from me, it's impossible to spell "Ecclefeshan" the same way twice. See?)
Maple Anything
Whether it's maple syrup, maple-cured ham, or those maple-leaf-shaped candies made of maple sugar sold in stores all across the nations, maple is a favourite flavour among Canadians and is a "must-try" for many tourists first visiting our shores.
We mustn't forget maple-cured bacon, maple-smoked cheese, maple-iced doughnuts, maple-cream doughnuts, maple butter, maple coffee, maple tea, maple popcorn, maple cookies, maple bacon cake, and maple syrup on snow - the treat that first introduced the glorious phenomenon of maple to European settlers.
Maple flavour is awesome, and we hold this truth to be self-evident.
Nanaimo Bars
Known to make sensitive teeth hurt, these awesomely sweet and delicious squares comprise a foundation of cookie crumbs covered in vanilla buttercream filling and capped with a layer of chocolate.
Named for Nanaimo, British Columbia, recipes for these bars circulated for years under various names, including "Women's Institute Bars" and "Mable's Squares." The name doesn't matter, though - it is truly the taste that makes these bars awesome.

Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
Jason Trieu. We
never really know what someone else has suffered. So glad to hear his happy
ending!
-- Vicki Horsfield,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Attended regular
weekly RECCO meeting featuring presentation by Kristie Ebi on how Climate
Change could make our food less nutritious. Great program. The easy car-bicycle
is such a great idea - and would be a great funding opportunity for small clubs
to make an impact on many lives!
-- Keith Evans,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Climate
Change/Nutrition of Food. Liked the
bicycle ambulances in Malawi. Makes us appreciate how nice we have it
here!
-- Elizabeth
Gaffney, Rotary Club of Stratford, District 6330
The talk by Jason
Trieu about escaping from Vietnam brought back memories for me as I visited
Vietnam as a tourist in 1971 and went with the YMCA to visit an orphanage and
since wondered about the fate of those children as the country was overrun by
the communists.
-- David Werrett,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Jason Trieu was
the oldest in his family and became responsible to look after his brothers in
an orphanage in Vietnam. When it was arranged for them to go to America, he was
held back by the South Vietnamese police because he was of age to help fight. Jason was separated from his brothers at that
instance, but later he was able to have a second chance through American
efforts. He was almost detained again,
but at the last minute was able to leave the country for America.
This was a great
story of human suffering that people have had to overcome that most of us can
never imagine.
-- Michael Thomas,
Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

In order to
provide more privacy for the university students, Project Amigo’s University
Student housing was in dire need of new curtains for each of its nine dorm
rooms, the House Mom quarters, and the lounge area.
Long-time
volunteer, Elly Contreras, who spends her winters in Mexico, happens to have a
sewing machine there, and went to buy 25 meters of colourful fabric, just
before COVID made us all stay at home.
With not much
else to do, the self-isolation period was the perfect time to tackle the first
stage of this huge project.
In total 12
panels ranging from 1.40 Meters to 2.60 Meters in length are now ready to go to
Casa Amiga. Once the schools open again
and the students return to the Dorm, several will have brand-new curtains plus
more privacy. The rest will be done next winter season when Elly returns to
Mexico with her husband.

Program Donations
Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.
We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
