Inspirational moment

This 173-pound golden retriever was neglected and almost euthanized by his previous owners. But a foster mom stepped in when the vets knew there was hope for Kai on a strict diet and fitness routine.

Watch this amazing dog lose over 100 pounds and half his body weight.

You can help Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue care for more dogs like Kai by donating to: https://thedo.do/misfits. You can keep up with Kai's and all of his adventures on Facebook: https://thedo.do/kai.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

November 16.  Excellent new member orientation video by the Lima club.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

November 19.  Pico Iyer's Ted Talks was inspiring.  How he took the game of ping pong and translated it into life lessons!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

What ping-pong taught me about life.  We were taught similar ideas as youngsters; i.e., It wasn't if you won or lost, but how you played the game.
-- Larry Reynolds, Rotary Club of Campbell River Lunch

How lively the meeting is even as it is an e-club. Looks more lively than a face-to-face meeting!
-- Serge Sourou OGA, RCAE, District 9102

Pico Iyer.  The topic was about ping pong with its origins and how one gentleman has learnt from playing it in Japan.
Pico Iyer was taught that the point of a game was to win. The first-ever game of ping pong took 2.5 hours to record the first point. In Japan at his health club, they play doubles every six minutes against another pair. While playing they accumulate points but never really win because of the frequent switch. It is said that in Japan, the game breeds competition without the emphasis on winning.

The game itself is deep in diplomacy throughout its history when China and the US broke the ice with one another and played in 1972.

Pico also tells the story of the first-ever recorded game where it took 2.5 hours to record the first point. One person in that game in 1932 was taken to Auschwitz during WWII and survived because the guards recognized through that particular game.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

"Never, never think about the score" is a good lesson except perhaps in school, but I like the reminder about our responsibility to the Rotary Foundation. While we are always reminded of the benefits of the various projects in education, health, water, etc., in the poorer countries, we often forget that 25% of the annual fund given to the Rotary Foundation by members of our district are returned to our district to be used as matching funds for local projects.

Our club benefited from a matching grant again this year, and this is because of our generous giving to the Rotary Foundation.
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Owens's lecture on how 20% 0f patients who have been diagnosed in a vegetative state are aware of things occurring around them. Amazing!
-- Steve Sandlin, Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak, Decatur, AL  U.S.

Food for thought
...submitted by David Werret

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and partners are “greening” Canada’s transport technology — here’s what they are doing.

The international marine industry is responsible for 90 percent of global trade, according to the Association of Canadian Port Authorities.

It’s also responsible for 3 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, a 2017 report from the International Council on Clean Transportation estimates, and this figure is only expected to grow.

This leaves ample room for innovation in the marine transport industry, especially as the world reckons with the growing threat of climate change.

And it didn’t take long for the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to recognize this. After becoming the first port in Canada to offer shore power — a supply of shoreside electrical power — for docked cruise ships, the Port of Vancouver now offers the same for container ships.

So, how exactly does shore power work?  Read more here.

This Week - Pavarotti

"Vesti la giubba" (Put on the costume) is a famous tenor aria from Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera Pagliacci. "Vesti la giubba" is the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because "the show must go on." The aria is often regarded as one of the most moving in the operatic repertoire of the time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria and exemplifies the entire notion of the "tragic clown": smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. This is still displayed today, as the clown motif often features the painted-on tear running down the cheek of the performer.
