The Elbow River has become an integral part of Calgary's origins, including naming conventions of decades past. (Carla Beynon/CBC)
Many of the
indigenous names for Calgary refer to where the Elbow River turns
abruptly north into the Bow River, making an
"elbow-like" curve.
The Elbow River
gets its name from the distinctive "crook" as it flows towards the
Bow River, which gets its name from the reeds that grew along its banks. They
were used by local First Nations to make bows. (Google Maps)
The seven names
are:
* Moh-kíns-tsis
* Wincheesh-pah
* Otos-kwunee
* Kootsisáw
*
Klincho-tinay-indihay
* Fort Brisebois
* Fort Calgary

Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
The Power of
Vulnerability. I love this form of
meeting! I think there are ways that we
can incorporate these engagement tools in the traditional club structure. Keep evolving and improving. You’re doing great!!
-- Mark Dixon, Rotary
Club of St. Albert, District 5370
What can be added
to Robin Esrock's Ted Talk? Very little. The sceneries, the good and not so
good foods are nothing compared to the experiences shared with locals. Chewing
Qat with the mayor of Sanaa in Yemen or sharing a can of sardines on the floor
of a train in Tunisia let me appreciate that only people create an experience.
September
25. This was an information-filled
meeting from the birds (puffins) to the bees (Bee-alive project) and also
shifting shoreline and the Trash Heroes of Yangon including our own Rotary
member Doug Dyer in Ko Tak, Thailand. It is important to see what our members
are involved with and The Dollywood Imagination Library is another great
project receiving support from the Rotary E-Club of Canada One.
-- Jean Michel
Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Having visited
Witless Bay and taking a boat tour with my wife to see the puffin colony, it
was interesting to learn about the annual program to save baby puffins.
-- Ivan Docker, Rotary
Club of Edmonton Strathcona, District 5370
Talking Trash
Yangon. Phone Kyaw whose love of sailing
started his involvement in cleaning the coastal area of the Yangon sailing
club. He is now the founder of Trash Hero Myanmar.
Trash Hero was
originally founded by Roman Peero who started a massive global project. There are globally over 200,000 kilos picked up by Trash Hero. The oceans around the
world are being continually contaminated with plastics.
The real goal of
trash Hero is to try and change the mindset of people’s way of thinking and use
reusable products instead of disposable.
-- Michael Thomas,
Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370
Talking
Trash. It was interesting to hear how
the speaker tried to motivate others to move from inaction to action regarding
becoming better stewards of the Earth.
-- Velma Noble,
RCCHP, District 5360

Rotary Jukebox
For a small donation, your favorite musician will be featured on one of our next e-meetings for everyone to enjoy.
Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured!
Cybercrime netted
a whopping $450 billion in profits last year, with 2 billion records lost or
stolen worldwide. Security expert Caleb Barlow calls out the insufficiency of
our current strategies to protect our data.
His solution? We need to respond to
cybercrime with the same collective effort as we apply to a health care crisis,
sharing timely information on who is infected and how the disease is spreading.
If we're not sharing, he says, then we're part of the problem.

Please consider making a small donation in lieu of a meal
to help us help those in need.
We thank you very much!
Program Donations
Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.
We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
