The Hassans co-founded and manage a not-for-profit agency that equips hospitals in Uganda with much-needed medical supplies used in childbirth.

Back when she was completing her BSc at the University of Waterloo, Christina Hassan participated in a co-op program that sent her to Uganda to work as a program administrator at a university and at local hospitals. She ended up watching a lot of women and children die in childbirth.
Worldwide, a woman dies from the complications of pregnancy and childbirth every two minutes. In Uganda, hospitals often lack even basic equipment, and labouring mothers are expected to bring their own delivery supplies, including sterile blades, gloves and sheets. Shortages of equipment mean that items that are intended to be disposable are often reused, increasing the spread of dangerous infections.

News from our E-Club family

Luncheon in Calgary

Recently, four of our E-Club Rotarians met for a lovely luncheon to celebrate Jean-Michel and to enjoy some fellowship and friendship.  Here they are:

This is a photo from lunch on February 3.  We didn't have much choice of background, and we did not want to go outside because it was -25C!!

L-R:  Biswanath, Jean-Michel, David, and Ethan

Never mind!  The fellowship and friendship looks to be just as warm
as you need!

David is holding the Major Donor pin that the club presented to Jean-Michel to recognize his donations to The Rotary Foundation.  Congratulations, Jean-Michel!  Rotary and our E-Club thank you!

Another reason for the get-together was to meet Biswanath as he was visiting Calgary.  Jean-Michel also invited new member Ethan Oatman.  Ethan works for Biswanath, but happens to live in Calgary at least some of the time. Ethan had visited many communities in the North last month for business, as well as travelling to India.

Project Amigo has a new Chairperson

PAG Elly writes:

It is my pleasure to announce that our fellow E-Club member, PDG Judy Brown, will be taking over Project Aigo for our club from Ed Jacob, who was our club representative.

Judy is a member of the PACS (Project Amigo Canada Society) board.  She and her husband Ron have sponsored students and participated in several Work Weeks.

Judy and Ron spend their winters in Mexico and have a good knowledge of the culture and of Project Amigo.  Judy also speaks some Spanish.

Judy will be in touch with Laura, our sponsored student, and will keep us up to date on any new developments.

Thank you, Judy, for your support!

Food for thought

Can what goes in the belly really affect your brain? Definitely!

One of the best ways to preserve your brain and nervous system is to give them a steady supply of essential nutrients.

Here's what should be on your plate to keep your mind sharp.

Program Donations

Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.

Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.

We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.

As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
