Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
I've known about phages for some time; in fact, one of our past members is a researcher in phage therapy. But I never understood the details of the Don MacLeans "American Pie". Thanks for this!

Dressing for Confidence and Joy; Stasia Savasuk / December 17 to 23 2018
Clothes do make the man ... or the woman! Who knew? Well, now I do! Interesting what cues people use to judge (but please do not look at my socks!). And interesting to hear the wisdom of children as so eloquently shown by Stasia's daughter - really cool program.
-- John Wojcicki, RC of Edmonton, Alberta, D-5370
Alexander Belcredi -Hearing about fages, which I knew as bacteriofages (shows my age) was uplifting. Finally taking the time to follow the link to the Shelterbox training and selection story was inspiring.
-- Pieter Zeeuwen, RC of Edmonton Northeast, D-5370

Welcome to the Rotary E-Club of Canada One! I am Rick Gibson and have been a Rotarian since 1988 and have been President of our Club, the Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise-Courtenay, and had many directorship roles.
I am also a major donor in the Rotary Foundation.
But I am also one of those members who has had 100% perfect attendance since 1988!
I have done physical make-ups throughout Canada, the US, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, and SE Asia. I cannot recommend strongly enough the fellowship you receive by doing make-ups.

THE HISTORY YOUR ROTARY FOUNDATION
The Rotary Foundation was born in 1917 when outgoing RI President Arch Klumph proposed and set up an endowment for the purpose of doing good in the world. The Rotary Foundation became an entity within Rotary International in 1928 when it was renamed as such, and now commonly referred to as TRF( The Rotary Foundation).
The Rotary Foundation continued to grow, in 1929 it made its first gift, a $500.00 donation to the Society for Crippled Children. That organization, created by Rotarian Edgar Allen, later grew into Easter Seals.
Over the years since first conceived, the Foundation has, with our support, introduced and maintained programs which allow us to continue to promote world peace and understanding while focusing on those less fortunate both in our communities and throughout the world. The first such program was established in l947, which was initiated as the Fellowships for Advanced Study. That grew into what is now known as the Ambassadorial Scholarships.
The l965-66 Rotary year can best be remembered for the establishment of three new programs: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and grants for projects consistent with the Objective of the Rotary Foundation (later to become known as Matching Grants).
In l978, Rotary introduced 3 H Grants (Health Hunger and Humanity). This program or project resulted in the immunization of 6 million Philippine children against polio. This program certainly can be seen as the planting of the seeds for Polio Plus which became a reality in 1978. Through our continuing efforts, we hope to -- and will -- eradicate polio worldwide in the very near future.
In line with our hope for world peace, in 1987-88, we held the first Peace Forums which led to what is now Rotary Peace Fellowships – another program that has positive impacts worldwide. In 2013, the Grants programs and processes were the subject of change, and now we have new district, global, and packaged grants which enable Rotarians worldwide to respond to the world's greatest needs.
Through the generosity of Rotarians, the Foundation has grown from the $26.50 donation in l917 to contributions totaling more than $1 billion USD. Contributions to the Foundation do not disappear, as Rotarians and clubs have access to Rotary Grants which empower us to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.
There are District Grants often referred to as District Simplified Grants. These grants fund smaller short-term projects that address the needs in our communities, and for that matter can be applied to projects in communities worldwide. The deployment of these grants is managed by each Rotary district.
Global grants are intended for, and do, focus on and support, large international projects designed to have sustainable and measurable results in one or more of our (Rotary's) areas of focus. The Rotary Foundation has the responsibility of accepting and reviewing applications for Global Grants.
The Board of Trustees of the Rotary Foundation values the support provided by our contributions and transforms our gifts into projects both close to home and around the world.
Our Club members during the 2013/14 Rotary year have certainly upheld their support for the Foundation, and I am confident that we will continue to do so. Rotary encourages Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) that is a $100.00 USD contribution by every Rotarian every year,. We have exceeded that, and no doubt will continue to do so.
Congratulations and Thank You!
-- Al Fedoriak
A little humour
As a kid, I only thought this was funny, but now as an adult, I know how painfully true it is ;)
