For the common good
...from the Foundation Trustee Chair (2025-26)

Nearly a year ago, I wrote my first message to you as Rotary Foundation trustee chair, encouraging you and all our members to take a fresh look at the Foundation and its unique way of making the world better.

In the months that followed, I invited Rotary members from around the world to share their own stories about projects they have led with Foundation support. They described the impact they witnessed firsthand and how thousands of lives have been transformed.

Now that you have heard about so many successful projects and the wonderful members and dedicated staff who make them happen, I ask that you, too, become part of this success story.

Your donation to The Rotary Foundation already makes a difference. However, I would like to take it a step further and encourage you to think bigger: Consider making a targeted investment in the area most important to you.

Each of us has a particular passion. Yet we all share something in common: We want people around the world to be better off. In Rotary, your dreams of a better world can become reality with the help of The Rotary Foundation. Because Rotarians don’t just dream – they put their dreams into action. And these actions make a real and lasting difference in so many lives.

With your investment in polio vaccinations, you work to ensure that no child will ever contract polio again. With your investment in Rotary Peace Centers, you contribute to world peace. By investing in our Annual Fund, you ensure that effective projects will continue to be sustainably funded.

Not every contribution to the Foundation needs to be large. Every gift helps us achieve the lasting impact you have read about this year. The world needs Rotary more than ever. It needs our courage, optimism, and commitment to the common good. This is why we need you.

We have a variety of areas of focus in Rotary. Whether you choose to support maternal health in Nigeria, literacy programs in Belize, economic empowerment in communities recovering from hardship, or freshwater protection projects, your investment will create a lasting, measurable impact.

Giving to the Foundation is about so much more than funding projects. It’s a way to show compassion and empathy for others. As I have said many times before – and I believe more now than ever – everything we do opens an opportunity for someone, somewhere.

I am grateful for this opportunity to serve.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will:

1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life

2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect

3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world

4. Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

5. Help maintain a harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities; report any suspected harassment; and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment

Rotary’s Code of Conduct provides a simple but powerful guide for ethical behaviour, emphasizing honesty, accountability, and respect for others. Along with the Four-Way Test, it encourages thoughtful reflection on how we live and interact, helping us become better citizens and better human beings.

A little quiz

A little quiz for those who “live by the sea,” perhaps.

As you probably know, there isn’t just one kind of whale. There are many types, in many sizes, with different names. This is true of many sea animals.

Below are the scrambled names of ten sea animals, with four of their types as clues. See how many of the solutions you can unscramble.

BOSTLER
red, banded, armoured, velvet

RABC
fiddler, arrow, decorator, king

CLOAR
carnation, pillar, fire, cactus

KARSH
cookie cutter, lemon, cow, goblin

NURCIH
cake, reef, heart, pencil

MALNSO
sockeye, pink, chum, coho

PRIMHS
barber pole, peppermint, sponge, snapping

SALE
leopard, bearded, crabeater, ribbon

AWELH
fin, minke, narwhal, pilot

GUPNEIN
macaroni, rockhopper, emperor, chinstrap

Have fun!  :)

Seeing a Need, Making a Difference

At its core, Rotary is not just about meetings or even projects—it’s about seeing.

• Seeing the neighbour who could use a helping hand.
• Seeing the student who needs encouragement.
• Seeing the quiet gaps in our communities that others might pass by.

Through Rotary International, Rotarians learn to look a little closer—and to act.

Service doesn’t always begin with a grand plan. More often, it begins with awareness… and a willingness to respond.

• A park is cleaned because someone noticed.
• A family is supported because someone cared.
• A life is changed because someone chose not to look away.

That is how stronger communities are built—not all at once, but one thoughtful action at a time.

In Rotary, we don’t just ask, “What can be done?”

We ask, “What can I do—right here, right now?”

And then… we do it.

Friendship Beyond Borders

June is a time when many of us reflect on the friendships we’ve built through Rotary—and the many ways those connections enrich our lives. One of the most unique opportunities to deepen those friendships is through Rotary Fellowships—global groups that bring together Rotarians, family members, and friends who share a common interest.

Take, for example, the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians. Members from around the world connect through a shared passion for aviation—organizing fly-ins, sharing experiences, and forming lasting friendships that go far beyond club meetings.

Whether your interest is cycling, music, wine, photography—or even something as simple as enjoying a good conversation—there is likely a Rotary Fellowship waiting to welcome you.

Because in Rotary, service may bring us together—but it is friendship that keeps us connected.

Food for thought

Food for thought – Learning English.

The bandage was wound around the wound.

The farm was used to produce produce.

The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

We must polish the Polish furniture.

He could lead if he would get the lead out.

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present
.

A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

I did not object to the object.

The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

They were too close to the door to close it.

The buck does funny things when the does are present.

A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
