Measles information and why it’s so dangerous

Measles is more than a childhood illness

Measles is serious, even for adults and particularly for people who have a weakened immune system.

Measles can cause complications in up to 1 in 3 unvaccinated people. In some cases, measles can cause:

• brain swelling
• pneumonia
• pregnancy loss.

It can also lead to lasting disability such as:

• deafness
• seizures
• serious movement problems.

Measles can also cause you to lose immunity against diseases you have previous protection against from past infection or vaccination.

We call this immune amnesia, and it can make you susceptible to more infections more often. Adults can also spread measles to babies and young children, who are more prone to serious complications from measles.

The journal Science published research showing that measles infection can “greatly diminish previously acquired immune memory.”

The journal Nature summarized the findings this way: measles can “wipe out the immune system’s memory” of previous illnesses.

Harvard Medical School News explains that measles can partially “obliterate immune memory” to pathogens encountered earlier in life.

The American Society for Microbiology gives a clear overview of how measles replaces old immune memory cells with measles-specific ones.

A recent public-health explanation from CDC Australia states:

“Measles can also cause you to lose immunity against diseases you have previous protection against.”

Further Canada eliminated measles in 1998 through widespread vaccination, and for many years only small travel-related outbreaks occurred. However, a large outbreak beginning in late 2024 spread across several provinces during 2025 and into 2026.

In 2025 alone, Canada recorded more than 5,400 measles cases — the highest number in decades — and temporarily lost its measles “elimination status” because transmission continued for more than a year.

As of spring 2026, measles cases are still being reported in Canada, although at lower levels than during the peak of the outbreak. Public health officials continue to stress that measles is extremely contagious and that vaccination with the MMR vaccine remains the best protection.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will:

1. Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life

2. Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect

3. Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world

4. Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

5. Help maintain a harassment-free environment in Rotary meetings, events, and activities; report any suspected harassment; and help ensure non-retaliation to those individuals that report harassment

Rotary’s Code of Conduct provides a simple but powerful guide for ethical behaviour, emphasizing honesty, accountability, and respect for others. Along with the Four-Way Test, it encourages thoughtful reflection on how we live and interact, helping us become better citizens and better human beings.

Humour

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual, later discovered to be a public school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, the US Attorney General said he believed the man is a member of the notorious al-Gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

Al-Gebra is a fearsome cult," he said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value.

They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.

"As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'there are three sides to every triangle."

A New Rotary Year Fast Approaches

As we approach the end of a Rotary year and look ahead to July 1st, we also mark the beginning of a new Rotary year—a time of renewal, fresh ideas, and continued commitment to service above self.

Rotary is more than meetings and projects.

Through Rotary International, we are part of a worldwide network of people who believe in taking action—whether it’s supporting our local communities, promoting peace, improving health, or advancing education.

Each new Rotary year offers us a simple but powerful opportunity: to recommit. To show up. To connect. And to find even small ways to make a difference.

As we prepare to turn the page, let’s carry forward the good we’ve done—and look ahead with purpose, energy, and optimism.

Because in Rotary, every new year - and every day - is another chance to do good in the world.
