The $1 Coin That Canadians Made Famous — by Accident

(How the Loonie became a symbol of trust and unity.)

When Canada introduced its new gold-coloured $1 coin in 1987, the public reaction was… uncertain. Many called it “funny money.” Cashiers hesitated to use it. Some said it would never catch on.

Then something unexpected happened.

During the 1988 Winter Olympics, Canadian coach Dave King secretly placed a one-dollar coin under the centre ice before the men’s hockey final — a quiet good-luck charm.

Canada went on to win the gold medal.

Word eventually leaked out, and the Loonie became a national talisman. Since then, coins have been hidden under Olympic ice surfaces repeatedly, and the original “Lucky Loonie” now sits in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

What began as a coin people doubted became a symbol of national pride and a tiny piece of Canadian magic.

Environment

This is the Veluwemeer Aqueduct in the Netherlands, where boats literally sail over cars. Instead of building a bridge for cars across the water, the Dutch flipped the idea and built a water bridge over the road. The aqueduct is about 3 meters deep, just enough for small boats to cruise above the traffic.

Rotary’s Birthday

On February 23, 1905, in a small office in Chicago, a young lawyer named Paul Harris gathered three friends with a simple idea: professionals connecting to build friendship, trust, and service.

From that first meeting grew Rotary International — now a global network of over a million members in nearly every corner of the world.

In 2026, Rotary celebrates 121 years of turning goodwill into action — through service, fellowship, and a shared belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they work together.

Happy Birthday, Rotary — and thank you for the privilege of being part of the story.

This truly is an outstanding and emotional eulogy and you can't help be drawn in to the meaning.  If you wish to listen to the presentation by the elder brother, click here.  You will be quite amazed, I believe.
