Rotary History in Canada

Rotary International's expansion into Canada marked a significant milestone in its history, establishing its first international presence. The Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Manitoba, became the first club outside the United States when it was chartered on April 13, 1912. rotary.org

Following Winnipeg's lead, several other Canadian cities established Rotary clubs, contributing to the organization's early international growth. By 1914, six additional Canadian clubs had been chartered, placing them among Rotary's first 100 clubs worldwide:

Toronto, Ontario: The Rotary Club of Toronto was among the early clubs established in Canada, contributing to the organization's expansion.
• Vancouver, British Columbia: The Rotary Club of Vancouver joined the growing list of Canadian clubs, furthering Rotary's reach on the west coast.
• Halifax, Nova Scotia: The Rotary Club of Halifax was established, marking Rotary's presence on the east coast of Canada.
• Hamilton, Ontario: The Rotary Club of Hamilton became part of the early Canadian Rotary movement, contributing to its regional influence.
• Montreal, Quebec: The Rotary Club of Montreal was among the first Canadian clubs, playing a role in the organization's early internationalization.
• Victoria, British Columbia: The Rotary Club of Victoria was established, extending Rotary's presence further into western Canada.

These pioneering clubs laid the foundation for Rotary's extensive network across Canada. Today, the country boasts over 700 clubs with more than 27,000 members, reflecting a century-long commitment to community service and international goodwill. edmontonrotary.com

Canada's early adoption and promotion of Rotary principles significantly contributed to the organization's global expansion, underscoring the nation's role in fostering international service and cooperation.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

February 2. A fine time to show the video of Tom Brokaw explaining Canada to Americans. It's a pity that a certain D Trump is unable to recall how many times Canada has been around to help out in times of distress such as 9/11 or the Iran crisis.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Humour

Pooh and Piglet sitting on a log. "What's the strangest thing that has happened to you Piglet?"

"The strangest thing that has happened to me, Pooh, was when I worked at the United Nations, and I was asked to get Kofi Annan a gram of cocaine."

I picked up the phone, "Kofi," I said, "right now the only one I can think of is "oceanic."

New members' corner

The Jasper wildfire ignited on July 22, 2024, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The fire was triggered by a lightning storm that struck the area, igniting multiple fires north and south of the Jasper townsite. These fires rapidly expanded due to strong winds and exceptionally dry conditions, leading to aggressive fire behavior. townandcountrytoday.com

The combination of natural factors, including the lightning strikes, prolonged high temperatures, and a dried-out landscape, created a perfect storm for the wildfire's rapid spread. cntraveler.com

The wildfire forced the evacuation of approximately 25,000 residents and visitors from Jasper and its surroundings. The blaze destroyed nearly a third of Jasper's structures before firefighters managed to control the flames. reuters.com

In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires in Jasper, the local Rotary Club has been actively involved in supporting the community's recovery efforts. They have collaborated with organizations such as the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge to provide assistance to those affected. Notably, the Rotary Club secured a Disaster Response Grant of $33,000, which has been instrumental in aiding local initiatives like the Jasper Food Bank. jasperlocal.com

Our Vision - The Rotary Club of Jasper will be a diverse and welcoming group of leaders who, demonstrating kindness and concern, strive to make the world a better place. We will be people of action, volunteering for the well-being of one another, our community, and the world. We will work together in the spirit of cooperation and fellowship, building strong partnerships and relationships, bringing peace and goodwill, all while having fun providing humanitarian service.

Our Mission - Together we serve to unite people for positive change.

Our Values - Fellowship & Fun, Integrity, Diversity, Commitment to Service & Leadership.

Our Rotary Mottos - The mottos Service Above Self and Doing Good in the World are strong ideals which shape our direction.

Rotary minute

Below is a note from Past District 7070 Governor Bob Wallace who is also our Disaster Response Coordinator here in District 7070. He has been in touch with Rotarians in the west. As a matter of fact, as you have heard and seen already, the mayor of Jasper, a Rotarian, has lost his home.

In response to the tragic Jasper Wildfire, the Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation is establishing the Jasper Fire Relief Fund, similar to what we did for the Ft. McMurray Wildfire in 2016.

There are currently several governmental agencies and NGOs working towards providing immediate relief to the residents of Jasper affected by this wildfire. Unlike these, our fire relief fund is intended to provide community agencies with funding to help rebuild the very necessary programs in the longer term after the fire. Grants from the fund will be disbursed to organizations offering programing related to mental health, sports, food supply, social programs and the many other necessities of a healthy community.

Donations to our Ft. McMurray Fire Relief Fund exceeded $1 million and we were able to assist over a dozen community agencies in rebuilding after that fire. With your help, we are hoping to see significant donations to the Jasper Fire Relief Fund. All donations qualify for a charitable receipt for tax purposes.

Additionally, the Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation established the Jasper Fire Relief Fund to support long-term rebuilding efforts. This fund aims to provide grants to community agencies focusing on mental health, sports, food supply, social programs, and other essential services necessary for a healthy community.
rotary7070.org

These combined efforts reflect the Rotary Club's dedication to restoring and enhancing the well-being of the Jasper community following the wildfires.
