Inspirational moment
As we approach the month of March, let us remember:
Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene are the building blocks of health, dignity, and opportunity.
In March -
In March -
and all through the year - let us honour Rotary’s commitment to these essentials by remembering that every drop we give flows into a river of change, bringing hope and life to communities in need.

What is the IPCC?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) does not have a report scheduled for release in 2025, but the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) was released in April 2022.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) does not have a report scheduled for release in 2025, but the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) was released in April 2022.
The report found that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires global emissions to peak before 2025.
Created in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the objective of the IPCC is to provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies. IPCC reports are also a key input into international climate change negotiations.
The IPCC is an organization of governments that are members of the United Nations or WMO. The IPCC currently has 195 members. Thousands of people from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC.
For the assessment reports, experts volunteer their time as IPCC authors to assess the thousands of scientific papers published each year to provide a comprehensive summary of what is known about the drivers of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and how adaptation and mitigation can reduce those risks.
An open and transparent review by experts and governments around the world is an essential part of the IPCC process, to ensure an objective and complete assessment and to reflect a diverse range of views and expertise. Through its assessments, the IPCC identifies the strength of scientific agreement in different areas and indicates where further research is needed. The IPCC does not conduct its own research.
What did the IPCC's AR6 report find?
• Human influence is causing permanent and irreversible damage to the climate system

What did the IPCC's AR6 report find?
• Human influence is causing permanent and irreversible damage to the climate system
• Limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires deep emissions reductions across all sectors
• Current policies are not enough to limit warming to 1.5°C
• The impacts of climate change are being felt earlier than expected
What are the implications of the IPCC's AR6 report?
• The world needs to take immediate action to limit warming to 1.5°C

• The world needs to take immediate action to limit warming to 1.5°C
• The choices and actions made in this decade will have impacts for thousands of years
• Small island developing states and least developed countries are being disproportionately affected

Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
January 17. "A world with no ice" is a video that needs to be watched by every politician.
January 18. Thanks for the Kaslo to New Denver video Patrick. Would have been about 1980 when we first travelled it and, like so many roads in the B.C. interior, it does not lose its attraction. Nice twisty roads and around every bend there is another visual surprise.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
January 19. Loved travelling with Patrick Gibson down the Kaslo to New Denver road!

UPDATE ON KIVA LOANS - Submitted by Rotarian Patrick
Kiva loans 34 & 35
#34
Madam Aminata (standing on the far left of the photo, with her hand raised), is the group's representative: she is 22 years old and is single with no children.
Madam Aminata is active in sheep fattening and is experienced, having practised this for several years. With this new loan, she plans to buy sheep, fatten them up and sell them when they are mature. With the profits she makes, she plans to save to grow her business and meet her own needs.
#35
To date, Liberia Cocoa has trained over 3,000 farmers, primarily women who face economic hardship that make it difficult for them to meet their basic needs.
Kiva's loan will enable Liberia Cocoa to buy additional equipment, obtain Fair Trade certifications, train farmers, and improve working capital for marketing, packaging, and exporting products. It will support improved incomes for 522 smallholder farmers and jobs for 48 company employees.
This is Liberia Cocoa’s second loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

Recently, Al Gore addressed people around the world who have trained with his organization, Climate Reality. In the face of gloomy political and climate news, he did his best to rally the troops. And you know, he’s still got it! Here’s an excerpt from what he said:
“We began this year confronted by the news that 2024 was, as was predicted, the hottest year in recorded history, breaking the record we set just last year. And by the way, the record in both of the last two years was broken by a fair amount, so much so that some of the leading scientists are saying they've got to figure out why it's increasing faster than they expected. We also know that global greenhouse gas pollution reached its highest level in 2024. As a result of all of this, we're confronted in increasingly devastating and heartbreaking ways by the harsh impacts of all this heat trapping pollution. [Here he listed some of the many extreme weather events, beginning, of course, with the LA fires.)
To achieve the goals of the Paris agreement, we need to cut emissions in half in this decade. The good news is we have all the solutions. We're already seeing records broken when it comes to the installation of clean energy, purchasing of electric vehicles, improvement of energy efficiency, and the implementation of so many similar solutions. So, we are making tremendous progress. If you look at all the new electricity generation installed worldwide last year, almost 90% of it was renewable.
We're making progress, but we're not moving fast enough, and a major reason is the influence and the power and money of the fossil fuel industry. So, this year, we need leaders like you to double down on implementing climate solutions in your communities. In some cases, that may mean taking on big oil and calling out their lies and misinformation and the many other tactics they use in their desperate effort to delay progress so their profits aren't hurt.
We need you to not only push for climate solutions, but to advocate for a just transition to clean energy that recognizes frontline communities and addresses environmental injustice head on. Recent elections around the world have shifted the political landscape for many of us, but they have not changed the fundamental reality that investments in climate are smart policy for leaders of countries, states, and cities, as well as for businesses, banks, and investors.

By acting on climate, we can create jobs, grow economies in a healthy, sustainable way, and improve health outcomes. We need you to share accurate information on the ways climate action will benefit your communities, and that includes calling out greenwashing by the fossil fuel
At this year's COP negotiations in Brazil, which will mark 10 years since the Paris agreement, we need your voices once again to push for the strongest possible outcome. Your voices and your actions are also essential in advancing efforts to scale up climate finance and get rid of anti-climate finance like the massive ongoing subsidies that the oil and gas industry receives all around the world. That's ridiculous. We need to stop it.
Change is happening. Don't let anybody tell you differently, it is happening, and it's going to continue to happen. But we know that much more must be done . . . So instead of being discouraged by temporary political setbacks in different countries around the world, we've got to redouble our efforts. In the face of increasing climate impacts, it can definitely be a challenge to muster the hope needed to fuel your work. So let me share some science that renews my hope.
Once the world reaches true net zero emissions, global temperatures will stop going up, and the lag time will be as little as three to five years. And even more significantly, if we stay at net zero emissions, about half of all the human-caused CO2 will have fallen out of our atmosphere and been absorbed into the upper ocean and the trees in about 30 years. Action makes a difference. Advocacy makes a difference.”

Rotary minute
Peace and service are at the heart of Rotary’s mission.
Through every act of kindness, no matter how small, we create ripples of hope that reach far beyond what we can see. True peace begins when we listen with open hearts, serve with selfless hands, and build bridges where walls once stood.
As Rotarians, we are not just dreamers of a better world—we are the builders, united by our belief in Service Above Self.
Together, we make peace possible, one person, one community at a time.
