Inspiration

When you have kids, you want to make sure they learn about responsibility — looking out for others and doing the right thing — but you may never get the chance to see if your kids got the message.

When you're a single parent, working and raising kids alone, it can be even more daunting, since your time with your kids is so limited.

I am one of the lucky parents who got the chance to find out what my kids had learned. When my twin sons were in fifth grade, they were appointed Safety Patrol Officers, responsible for helping their fellow students cross safely at one of Spokane's busiest intersections.

Although they grumbled about getting up early and being at school before the other kids arrived, they were proud of their badges and the job they had been selected to do.

A few weeks into the school year, I was at school for an open house when the Safety Patrol Advisor took me aside, saying, "You must be so proud of Tim!" I agreed, of course, but asked why she would say so. She went on to tell me that earlier that morning, a car had run a red light at the intersection. As the driver tried to apply the brakes, they locked, and the car swerved and jumped the curb near where the children were beginning to cross.

Tim yelled for the kids to get back and then placed himself between his charges and the oncoming car. Fortunately, the driver regained control of his car and managed to get back onto the street seconds before he would have hit Tim! Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The kids on the corner were pretty rattled but impressed with their fellow student. For me, hearing the story even second-hand was terribly frightening, but I was so proud I could hardly contain myself.

My son never mentioned it. When I finally asked him about the events of that morning, he just shrugged it off, saying, "No big deal, Mom."

I was happy to hear what he had done and was pleasantly surprised to learn that he wasn't making a big deal of it. He had done what he saw as his duty, and he had done it quietly. In my book, that describes what we expect of a hero.

I sometimes become exasperated with teenage shenanigans and attitude, but when I remember the fifth grade, I no longer wonder if my kids got the message.

Project Amigo owes both its birth and its longevity to the contributions of Rotarians and Rotary clubs. Our mission to change lives through education, literacy and opportunity for international service provides a perfect match for Rotarians and Clubs to provide "service above self" significantly, generously, and effectively.

Individual Rotarians and Rotary clubs can:

• Sponsor primary school children to attend school

• Sponsor youth in Secondary and Post-Secondary schools

• Serve with us in Mexico on a Humanitarian Volunteer Week

• Invite Project Amigo representatives to make a presentation to your Rotary Club

• Develop Club or District grants to support Project Amigo’s Literacy Programs

• Contribute to various “special need” campaigns that arise each year

We appreciate all the Canadian Rotary Clubs for their generous and continuing support:
Other groups:
• Knights of Columbus (Edmonton, AB)

A MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT 5370 GOVERNOR, 2024-25

District Governor, Brian Edwards

Welcome to Rotary year 2024 – 2025, as we continue to create “THE MAGIC OF ROTARY” across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Incoming RI President Stephanie Urchick expresses it well:
  • Through Rotary we create a better world for all.
  • The work that we do engages, is hard work, and it takes many to achieve success.
  • Success that to the people benefitting may seem like MAGIC.
It shows that someone cares.

For Rotarians looking in the mirror, the MAGIC is the belief in ourselves, and being able to say: “Because of you, the world is a better place.”

We carry on the work of those Rotarians that came before us, with specific focus on:

1. Empowering Women and Girls.
Our District is a leader in this area, as opportunities are provided, and people function and advance based on their capabilities and potential. Do you have your “Women in Rotary” pin, to be worn proudly as a statement of our beliefs and values?

2. Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Our District has created a positive initiative, with a particular focus on a feeling of “Inclusion” showing that we are headed down the right path. Have you signed the DEI pledge and wear the DEI pin, as a statement of our beliefs and values?

3. Advancing Positive Peace.
In a fractious world, not only across the globe but also in our local communities and in ourselves, Rotary values and beliefs play a role as the beacon to attract and lead. I believe that POSITIVE PEACE is woven into all of the work we do. I hope you find it as inspiring as I do.

4. Growing Membership in Rotary.
The good work that we do can only be done with people to do it. Obviously. We are considering a major, 3rd-party led Public Image and Marketing program to attract the members that we know are out there. There are many club models to fit the needs of our members. We must do our part to adapt.

Support for TRF.  Support for The Rotary Foundation is one constant that truly makes our organization great. It enables and increases the impact of the work that we do.

We ask you to think about contributing to these three areas:

The Annual Fund
This is how Global Grants and District Grants are funded. The $$’s available to our District are a direct reflection of donations made by District 5370 Rotarians.

Polio+ Society
Are the Rotarians that donate US$100 annually until polio is eradicated from the earth. The “+” reflects the additional benefits from our work. We have strengthened health systems worldwide which has increased routine healthcare and immunization of children.

Endowment Fund
Rotary’s tomorrow depends on what we do today. By donating to the Endowment Fund, your support for Rotary’s mission carries on with the interest earned on your funds supporting programs in perpetuity. Donations can be made on a planned basis from your estate.

Thank you all for everything you do for Rotary.
We serve and make a difference.
I look forward to visiting you and your community.
Collectively we raise the voice and profile of Rotary.

AND A MESSAGE FROM OUR

2024-25 CLUB PRESIDENT –  Vicki Horsfield

Hello All!

As my first letter as new President of our club for 2024-25, I want to thank you for your confidence. But a president does not lead a club alone – rather, he or she is a facilitator working along with the great members of the club. I look forward to working with this small but mighty club (words stolen from Past-President Neil)!

As “saving” the environment is something dear to my heart, this year I would like to put forth a challenge to the members of our club to commit to making specific lifestyle changes to reduce their use of plastic. I would like to ask you to keep a journal, record your solutions and your successes, and report them to the club in our weekly meeting bulletin.

I will go first: Now when I order something to drink in a restaurant, I make a point of telling the server that I do not want a straw. Then I ask if they use either paper straws or plant-based straws. If the answer is no, I ask them to tell their manager that clients (me) are asking for a change in their policy – ie to no longer use plastic straws.

In a recent TED talk, the speaker pointed out that we have all the solutions to stopping Climate Change. The crucial part was that we ALL have to implement ALL of the solutions NOW if we are going to stop the destruction. Each of us can’t change the world, but we can change what we ourselves do!!

Humour
...contributed by Rotarian Vicki

The young woman who submitted the tech support message below (about her relationship with her husband) presumably did it as a joke. Then she got a reply that was way too good to keep to herself. The tech support people's love advice was hilarious and genius!

The query:

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House Cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed: Desperate

**********

The response (that came weeks later (out of the blue)…

Dear Desperate,

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System. Please enter command: I thought you loved me.html and try to download Tears 6.2. Do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the Tears application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download Snoring Loudly Beta version.

Whatever you do, DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Mother-In-Law 1.0 as it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.

In addition, please do not attempt to re-install the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Cooking 3.0.

Good Luck!

Food for thought

“Asking for help is a superpower anyone can have but only some people use. It is brave to ask for help. Asking for help is the first step toward finding a mentor. Mentors can help us change our lives if we let them."

— Alexi Pappas, Bravey

“Debt defines your future, and when your future is defined, hope begins to die. You have committed your life to making money to pay for your past.”

Reputation is a form of wealth.

The best returns come from your biggest opportunities, not your biggest problems.

And a contribution from Rotarian Vicki -

Did you know that a group of foxes is called a "skulk"? In Canada, red foxes are commonly found across various habitats, from forests to prairies and even urban areas.

These cunning creatures are known for their adaptability and elusive nature.

The term "skulk" fittingly describes their stealthy and secretive behaviour, especially when they are hunting or avoiding predators. Observing a skulk of foxes in the wild is a rare and fascinating experience, showcasing Canada's diverse and vibrant wildlife.
