A Canadian Happy Story

A wedding photoshoot in Canada took an unexpectedly dramatic turn as the bridegroom leapt into a lake to save a little boy from drowning.

Clayton and Brittany Cook were posing for wedding photos on a park bridge in Kitchener, Ontario, when the groom noticed a boy in distress in the water.

With no thought for his suit, Mr Cook jumped into Victoria Park lake and pulled the young boy on to the shore.

Their wedding photographer captured the rescue.

The images have since gone viral.

"For several minutes these kids were following us, and I was just keeping an eye on them because they were standing close to the water," Clayton told the BBC.

"Then while Brittany was getting her solo shots taken I realised only two were standing on the rock ledge.

"I saw the boy in the water struggling to keep his head up. That's when I jumped down.

"I just kind of plucked him out and he was okay."

Clayton's wife said she originally thought he had jumped in the water as a joke.

"We'd like to think most people would probably make the same choice," she said.

"As soon as I could turn around he had already plunked him on the ground outside the river," wedding photographer Darren Hatt told the BBC. "So I just kept on capturing the story of the day, including this."

After being rescued, the boy appeared fine, if a little shaken, and went off with an older sibling.

Mrs. Cook said her husband's quick thinking and selfless action were just some of the reasons she fell in love with him in the first place.

"That's Clay to me," she told CTV. "It's something he would just instinctively do."

And it seems this story was in September of 2017 – better late than never!

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Heroes Fighting Malnutrition. I enjoyed the Humor sections. The TED Talk on fighting malnutrition described the importance of sustainable animal husbandry practices and bridging the gap between traditional and modern practices. It was interesting that a life-long vegetarian was talking about the importance of milk and meat in fighting malnutrition and its effects.
-- Elizabeth Rhoads, Rotary Club of Wilmington Delaware, District 7630

June 3, Fighting Malnutrition. I hadn't been aware of stunting as an issue, and am pleased to see that Shruthi is researching and promoting solutions.
-- Todd Colbourne, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040

Three Mysteries of the Universe – New Forces. I had no idea that the universe is still expanding, and @ a rapid rate. Dark matter was discussed in a helpful manner- scary problem it seems to me.
-- Velma Noble, Rotary Club of Heritage Park, District 5360

June 12. Great content today. The Rotary minute was entertaining and the video about the Newfs (Newfoundland dogs) as we used to call them was great. They're not often thought of as a water dog but can outperform Labradors and Chesepeake Bay retrievers in the water.
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

June 13. The TED talk about the unsung heroes fighting nutrition Africa is quite a remarkable story of how pastoralists are changing the nutrition of the local people.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Food for thought

Re Jasper National Park

An 18-year-old Enderby firefighter put on a display of heroics Monday night when she swiftly rounded up people in Jasper National Park, getting them safely away from an encroaching wildfire.

Colleen Knull, a volunteer firefighter at the Enderby Fire Department, was working a summer job at the Jasper Lodge in the park. She has less than one year of experience as a firefighter, and was off duty on that July 22 night, but that didn't stop her from taking charge of a dangerous situation.
Colleen Knull safety guided 16 people out of an evacuation order zone in Jasper National Park Monday night, July 22, 2024. (

An evacuation order was issued for the area that night, but Knull said she saw the danger signs before it was issued.

"My first indication that there was a fire was we had noticed smoke coming up from the mountainside, and during my previous training in wildfire, I used some of the knowledge that I obtained from that and applied it to read the smoke, wind directions and how close it was," she said.

She got an alert of the fire texted to her by a family friend, and about 15 minutes later, an evacuation order was issued for Jasper National Park.

After receiving the order to evacuate, Knull started knocking on cabin doors, waking up the guests at the lodge.

"Then I was notified that there was a hiker campground just above us and they had no way of knowing that we needed to evacuate," she said. "So I walked five minutes up the trail and then proceeded to evacuate everybody out of that area and bring them down into the rest of the group."

From there, she led a total of 16 people on a four-hour hike through difficult terrain, to where her truck was parked.

Here is a thought-provoking documentary,
contributed by Rotarian Doug.
If you have the time to view the video, please do.

The documentary is longer than one hour, so you might wish to set aside some time to view it at your leisure – as a separate entity rather than as part of this particular Rotary Club meeting.

Keep your fingers poised to press SKIP to quickly bypass the numerous ads that populate the video.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), tourism is a significant economic contributor for many countries, often ranking within the top five contributors to their GDP. However, the exact number can fluctuate based on changes in economic conditions, tourism trends, and how the data is measured.

A
s of recent data, it is accurate to say that a substantial number of countries rely heavily on tourism as a major economic sector, with approximately 80 countries fitting this description.

The documentary is longer than one hour, so you might wish to set aside some time to view it at your leisure – as a separate entity rather than as part of this particular Rotary Club meeting. Keep your fingers poised to press SKIP to quickly bypass the numerous ads that populate the video.

It would be interesting to know your thoughts on the documentary. Click the link below.

Humanitarian Project to Improve Health and Combat Poverty
in Mayan Villages

District 7910 - Central Massachusetts- created a Global Grant and led a group of Westborough, MA and other district Rotarians to install 184 stoves in the homes of Mayan villagers along the shores of picturesque Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Most villagers cook on an open flame inside their homes.

Studies by the World Health Organization have determined that smoke inhalation is a root cause of death and poor health in Mayan women and the primary cause of death in their children, ages 1-5.

These new efficient cook stoves, however, reduce indoor carbon monoxide by 99% and allow children to go to school - rather than gathering firewood all day - as each cinder block stove burns 85% less wood.

Banff (region and town)

Banff constantly tops the list of the world’s most beautiful national parks and it’s easy to see why. It really is one of the best places in Alberta to explore.

Established in 1885, it is Canada’s oldest national park and is located in the ruggedly wild Canadian Rockies. With trails, lakes, forests and mountains to keep you enthralled, Banff is every outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination.

Honestly, the whole area is incredible and it’s hard to bullet point into a few sentences. That being said, check out our full 1-week Banff itinerary to explore Banff National Park. It really is incredible.

How educating girls can help fight climate change. In places like West Africa 17% of the population lack basic literary skills such as reading and writing. The more educated the more awareness children, especially girls have about climate change.

This article appeared in Rotary Digital - https://magazine.rotarygbi.org/rotary-responds-brazil-floods - an online publication of Rotary Britain and Ireland.

BRAZIL STORY BY: NUNO VIRGILIO NETO AND RENATO DANTAS

The southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul is still reeling from catastrophic flooding last month. Nuno Virgilio Neto and Renato Dantas from the magazine Rotary Brasil describe the work which Rotary has been doing.

“I held on until the firefighters arrived and then left my building by swimming. The water was already two metres high. I took care to raise everything, but it wasn't enough. The water was stronger."

Those were the words of Luiz Gonzaga Gonçalves, District Governor 4670 and a resident of Porto Alegre who describes the pain inflicted on the inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul who, for weeks between April and May, faced the greatest climatic catastrophe in the state's history.

Until the closing of this edition, the floods had left a trail of destruction in 467 cities, causing the death of 161 people and the disappearance of 85. With 71,503 people displaced and 581,633 homeless, authorities estimate that more than 2.3 million inhabitants were affected by the rains.

The tragedy was met with what is considered the largest solidarity network in Brazil’s history, with thousands of volunteers mobilised and millions of reais in donations.
