Inspirational moment

Canadiana

The Sourtoe Cocktail Club is an infamous drinking establishment located in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada. It gained notoriety for its unique and somewhat macabre tradition of serving a cocktail garnished with a preserved human toe.

The club's history dates back to 1973 when a local riverboat captain named Dick Stevenson discovered a preserved human toe in a jar while cleaning a cabin. The toe allegedly belonged to a Prohibition-era rum runner who had his frostbitten toe amputated. Stevenson came up with the idea to use the toe as a bizarre and distinctive garnish for a drink.

The tradition of the Sourtoe Cocktail was born, and it became a rite of passage for visitors to Dawson City. To become a member of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club, individuals had to consume a shot of alcohol (typically whiskey) with the toe touching their lips. The rule was "You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe."

Over the years, several toes have been used in the cocktail as they inevitably get worn down or damaged. There have been instances where toes have been swallowed, stolen, or lost, but new donations have kept the tradition alive. Donors have bequeathed their amputated toes to the club, ensuring a steady supply of replacements.

In 2013, an audacious patron intentionally swallowed the toe during the act of consuming the Sourtoe Cocktail. However, the club's policy was that the toe must be returned, and the patron was fined $500 for swallowing the toe, but the club managed to obtain a new one to continue the tradition.

The Sourtoe Cocktail Club has gained worldwide attention and has become a popular tourist attraction in Dawson City. The club has strict rules regarding the toe and the drinking ritual, and those who successfully complete the challenge receive a certificate and become official members of the club.

It's worth noting that while the Sourtoe Cocktail Club is an eccentric and unique establishment, it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Some people may find the concept unsettling or distasteful, but it has undeniably become a part of Dawson City's history and continues to draw curious visitors.

Food for thought

Listen and share: Rotary Voices Podcast

Club websites, social media posts, and ads are all great ways to share with your community the impactful work that Rotary clubs and members do. Now there’s another way to expand Rotary’s reach: The Rotary Voices Podcast. The podcast offers audio versions of stories from Rotary magazine, as well as bonus interviews, and is our newest channel to spread the word about Rotary.

“The Trailblazers” podcast, for instance, features U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who happens to be a former Rotary International employee, and Rotary International President Jennifer Jones. The pair discuss lessons in leadership, the necessity of diversity, and other subjects.

Listen to the podcasts yourself and then share links to them on your club’s social media channels and other communications. The Rotary podcasts are available at on.rotary.org/podcast or wherever you get your podcasts.
