Inspirational moment

***

And an inspiring story below from Rotarian Jim Kenyon.  Thanks, Jim!

After 20+ years in Rotary, I’m often asked what was a high point; what was a moment that really stands out as an accomplishment. Was it looking at a dam that we built in Rajasthan? Was it a local project that remains to this day? What really makes someone proud to be a Rotarian. And not being asked when did you join Rotary, but when did you actually become a Rotarian.

For me, there are many high points over the years. But one moment certainly stands out.

On one of my flights to India to build dams and participate in the National Immunization Day (NID) in India vaccinating kids against Polio in Haryana along the Pakistan border, I grabbed a good lunch at YVR before the flight to New Delhi. I was served by a young lady in her late teens who was rather talkative and asked where I was going and what I was doing. It was a great opportunity to push Rotary and I did my best to explain who we are, what we were doing, and how we were doing it.

But the proudest moment of all was when she asked, with a perfectly straight face “That’s nice, but what is Polio???” She had no idea what Polio was…

I’ve never been prouder to be a Rotarian!

Tamara Larson grew up in Edmonton in the 1970s. She recalls how whenever she saw an injustice — bullying on the school playground, for instance, or images of refugees fleeing a war-torn country — she would protest to her father that it didn’t seem fair. His reply: "Life’s not fair."

But that was never the end of the conversation, only its beginning. Her mother, a teacher, and her father, a Rotarian and the owner of a commercial excavation business, taught her that she had the power to change things.

"The word ‘can’t’ was not in our vocabulary," Larson says. "We were taught that you can do whatever you want, if you put your mind to it. If there’s no door there, build one."

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

How to pull the plug on climate change: Steve Oldham. I did not realize the critical timeframe we have to deal with climate change and some of the technology that already exists to help us if we choose to do so.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

July 3. A very informative meeting. The story of the Gimli Glider running out of fuel was not as simple as just the change from Imperial to metric, with inoperative gauges and lack of training being part of the picture. The TED talk about the Co2 capture shows how internal combustion engines can be operated on fuel derived from Co2 capture and not lead to more pollution.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 4. I enjoyed the musical Four-Way Test.
-- Dietrich Brand, Rotary Club of Medicine Hat, District 5360

Announcements

HAITI - On August 14, 2021, Haiti was rocked by a massive 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake. At least 227 dead, with hundreds injured or missing. The Rotary District 7020 Earthquake response committee met today and are assessing the damage done; the immediate needs; and how to help.

As we compile a list of needs and navigate the logistics to provide speedy aid, we are mounting an urgent fundraising appeal - if you'd like to help now, please donate via credit card, paypal, cheque, or wire transfer.

Cash is always the easiest way to get help to those who need it quickly. Email rotary7020relief@gmail.com for more information.

Our committee is in direct contact with Rotarians and our partners on the ground - including local authorities and experts - which is the most effective way we can help.

My husband, who believes in avoiding doctors and hospitals at all costs, had to have emergency surgery for an inflamed appendix. In pain, but still protesting the whole idea of an operation, he muttered, “When God gave man an appendix, there must have been a reason for putting it there.”

“Oh, there was,” said the surgeon. “God gave you that appendix so I could put my children through college.”

For years, I had been telling my friend Pete that he ate too much fast food, but he always denied it. One day, he admitted I was right.

“What changed your mind?”

“My grandson. When my daughter told him I was coming to visit, he asked, ‘Grandpa from Florida, or Grandpa from Pizza Hut?’”

While doing renovations in our house, one of the workmen paused to look at a flattering photo of me wearing makeup and a fancy gown. I heard him let out a low whistle and ask my son, Joshua, “Who’s that?”

“That’s my mom,” Joshua answered.

“Wow,” the man said, “my mother doesn’t look like that.”

“Yeah,” my son said, “well, neither does mine.”

Being a teenager and getting a tattoo seem to go hand in hand these days. I wasn’t surprised when one of my daughter’s friends showed me a delicate little Japanese symbol on her hip.

“Please don’t tell my parents,” she begged.

“I won’t,” I promised. “By the way, what does that stand for?”

“Honesty,” she said.

Visiting his parents’ retirement village in Florida, my middle-aged friend, “Tim, went for a swim in the community pool while his elderly father took a walk. Tim struck up a conversation with the only other person in the pool, a five-year-old boy. After a while, Tim’s father returned from his walk and called out, “I’m ready to leave.”

Tim then turned to his new friend and announced that he had to leave because his father was calling. Astonished, the wide-eyed little boy cried, “You’re a kid?”

Food for thought

Every day, it seems, we’re fed new advice about our diets. We’ve been told we can’t have bread, we shouldn’t eat eggs and to hold the butter. As The Diet Myth author Tim Spector notes, “So what is there left to eat? Maybe a bit of lettuce.”

At the same time, a whopping half of the calories we consume come from food that isn’t really food: it’s ultra-processed concoctions of starch, sugar, salt, hydrogenated oils, preservatives and additives. These foods are tasty and manufactured to make us crave them. But they’re killing us.

“Poor diet is the leading risk factor for death in Canada,” warns University of Montreal professor Jean-Claude Moubarac. “It’s a nutritional calamity.” His work suggests that only one in five Canadians cooks every day. Over the past several years, our appetite for convenience foods has skyrocketed — and so has the rate of obesity and diabetes.
