Inspirational moment

Sir Nicholas Winton (1909 – 2015)

Sir Nicholas Winton was born on 19 May 1909 in Hampstead, London, England. He died on 1 July 2015 at the age of 106, in Slough, Berkshire, England - 76 years to the day after one of the trains left Prague carrying children he helped to save.

The recently-released Netflix film, One Life, is a beautifully moving portrayal of Sir Nicholas Winton — heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure. In a short span, it captures both his quiet magnificence and the steadfast vision of his small circle of companions: ordinary people who, precisely because of their ordinariness, believed they could do what needed to be done.

It is the portrait of a man who simply chose to act when others hesitated, and a small group of ordinary companions who simply did what compassion asked of them.

Together, they changed the course of nearly seven hundred lives.

Years later, when Sir Nicholas sat quietly in that television studio, unaware that the adults surrounding him had once been the children he saved… the moment they rose to their feet was almost too beautiful to bear.

His surprise.
His humility.

The way emotion flickered across his face as he realised what his quiet courage had made possible. There was not a dry eye in the room — nor could there be.

The legacy of Sir Nicholas remains a gentle but piercing reminder that a single ordinary life, guided by conscience and kindness, can alter the world in ways the rest of us can only hope to emulate.

Terry Fox: A True Embodiment of “Service Above Self”

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope began with one young man and a dream of raising $1 million for cancer research. Today, the annual Terry Fox Run — organized entirely by volunteers — has raised over $850 million worldwide.

Rotary connection: Terry’s legacy speaks directly to Rotary’s ethos: courage, perseverance, and the idea that ordinary people can create extraordinary good.

The World’s Largest Skating Rink & Winter Community Spirit

The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa becomes a 7.8-km skating rink each winter, drawing locals and visitors for a uniquely Canadian experience.

Rotary connection: Many Rotary clubs across Canada host community winter festivals, hot-chocolate stations, and youth activities on local outdoor rinks — turning the coldest months into warm moments of fellowship.

A submission from Rotarian Gillian

Chris and I returned from Yucatan a week ago and the final leg of our journey was the floatplane from Vancouver Airport to Salt Spring Island.

We quite often do this if the ferry connections don’t work (a regular occurrence!).

The special bit about this journey is that the Beaver was exactly 70 years old having been built in 1956. It is amazing that this workhorse of a plane is still in regular use on the coast.

The pilot was almost as old as the plane!

Views of the Georgia Straight and Gulf Islands. A beautiful day and lovely welcome home.

Thanks, Gill!

Little Bit of Service

Submitted by Rotarian Doug

Lucky Dog is a rescue shelter in Chapala where Johanne and I go once a week to walk dogs and provide some assistance. The animals are so well cared for and they are definitely very lucky!

Unfortunately there way more dogs here in need than available homes. Currently, the shelter is at capacity and unable to rescue dogs from the streets.

Some of these dogs have been resident here for 3 years or more. Although they are well cared for, a permanent home is a much better solution.

They are such lovely animals and would make loyal and gentle pets. Just add love!

Rotary members' corner

This month, you’re invited to take a simple step in support of global WASH efforts.

Consider exploring one of these easy ways to make a difference:

Learn more: Visit one Rotary water project online and see how clubs are creating long-term change.

Start small locally: Reduce water waste at home, share a tip with your club, or highlight a local clean-water initiative.

Give or support: Even modest contributions help charities and Rotary partners expand WASH programs.

Tell a story: If you’ve travelled or been involved in a hands-on water project, share your experience at a meeting — your story could inspire the next project.

Each action, no matter how small, keeps Rotary’s ripple of impact moving forward.

March Focus

March is Rotary’s month to spotlight one of the most life-changing Areas of Focus: Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH).

Across the world, millions of families still lack safe drinking water and the dignity of proper sanitation.

Rotary members step into this gap by supporting projects that install wells, repair community water systems, build latrines, provide menstrual-hygiene education, and train communities to maintain their new infrastructure.

These efforts don’t just improve daily life — they break cycles of poverty, reduce illness, and give children (especially girls) the chance to stay in school.

Every clean glass of water tells a story of service, sustainability, and hope.
