AI and Education: Human Agency in an Automated World
Under the theme “AI and education: Preserving human agency
in a world of automation”, the 2025 International Day of Education encourages
reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities to
navigate, understand and influence technological advancement.
As computer and AI-driven systems become more sophisticated,
the boundaries between human intention and machine-driven action often blur,
raising critical questions about how to preserve, redefine, and, ideally,
elevate human agency in an age of technological acceleration

Canadiana
John Candy is pure Canadiana because he embodied everything the world associates with Canada—warmth, generosity, sharp wit, and that unmistakable, self-deprecating humour. From his early days on SCTV to his unforgettable film roles, he carried Canadian charm into every performance.
And when you pair him with fellow Canadian comic Eugene Levy—especially in their 1985 appearance on David Letterman as the Shmenge brothers—you get a perfect snapshot of Canadian comedy at its finest. Their unexpected musical talent in that performance only adds to the delight, reminding us just how versatile and gifted these iconic Canadians truly were.

Further – re John Candy -
“This is no meagre life we reflect on today. This is as full a life as any human can live. Magnificent of visage, eyes and frame. A titan of a gentle, golden man.”

“You can think what you want about me. I’m not changing. I like – I like me.”
And if you haven’t seen the film, you owe it to yourself to watch it. on Netflix – I like me.

...and from Doug Dyer
...from Ajijic (Mexico)
To my E-Club compadres,
We hope that all is well and that it has been a good year for you and your loved ones. Johanne and I have had another full calendar for which we are very grateful. In 2025, we touched down in: Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Cyprus and yes, even Canada. Once again, we met some wonderful folks and had many great pets to care for.
In April 2026, we will have completed 10 years of full time travel. Fully nomadic, slowly travelling to over 26 countries and completing 115 house sits. That sounds a little overwhelming and at times it is even hard for us to grasp. Recently we have noticed that house sitting has taken a different turn, with more challenges arising. We have also found that travel has become much more complicated and costly. To that end, we have decided to set up a home base, and not be full time on the road or in the air.
Of all the places we have visited over the years, Mexico seems to keep calling us back. Ajijic on Lake Chapala in particular, is most suited with its ideal climate and easy lifestyle. So, we are taking on a lease of a small apartment here for 2026 and will see how that works for us. The good news is that it is just 30 minutes from the airport in Guadalajara, so we will continue to travel and house sit at will.
We are looking forward to a new chapter and we will keep you posted as it unfolds. Maybe, put Mexico on your list of places to visit.
Happy New Year!!
Best wishes from Johanne and Doug

Announcements
During this month, Rotarians are encouraged to use their professional skills to serve their communities, a core part of Rotary's mission, as stated in Rotary International's magazine.
The month is also a time to highlight Vocational Service as one of Rotary's five "Avenues of Service."
Key aspects of Vocational Service Month
• Ethical standards: The month emphasizes the importance of high ethical standards in all professions, a commitment reflected in the Four-Way Test, which asks: "Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?"
• Dignifying occupations: Rotarians are encouraged to see their profession as an opportunity to serve society.
• Community projects: Clubs can organize projects that use the vocational skills of their members, such as providing career information to youth, mentoring small businesses, or hosting workshops to help employees develop new skills.
• Member engagement: A common activity is a "mini-classifications talk" series, where each member gives a short presentation about their profession to promote vocational awareness among the club members.
• Vocational awards: Clubs are encouraged to present a vocational award to a member of the community who has demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and ethical conduct.
Do you have a Rotary story that you'd like to share with the Rotary World?
Please feel free to forward an approx. 150 - 200 word message or any material suggestions in an e-mail, or in a Word document, along with a JPeg picture or two, to E-Club Administration Chair, Kitty Bucsko.
We'd love to hear from you!
We appreciate donations made by our generous visiting Rotarians!
The Rotary E-club of Canada One appreciates donations made by visiting Rotarians and guests when they attend our meeting.
In recognition of the support given to our Club by these visitors, the Club makes a quarterly donation of $100 to the Rotary Foundation.

What is ESRAG?
ESRAG members see a world where people unite and take action to protect the environment for a sustainable future.
The climate, biodiversity, and pollution crisis threaten humanity and the planet. Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation encourage clubs and districts to mitigate and adapt to this triple planetary crisis through projects and programs outlined in the Environment Guidelines for Global Grants.
In accordance with Rotary International’s guidance for Action Groups, the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group, ESRAG, gathers individuals, experts and partners whose goal is to provide awareness, dialogue, resources, and best practices for the environment.
ESRAG, assists the Rotary family to plan, run, and evaluate projects, programs, and practices that support actions in the Environment Area of Focus and address the triple planetary crisis.
We work together for a sustainable future for our planet!

According to https://earthsky.org/tonight/january-full-moon-is-the-wolf-moon/?utm
this full moon is near Jupiter. The bright star near the moon on January 2 and 3, 2026, isn’t a star.
It’s the mighty planet Jupiter, which will reach its biggest and brightest for 2026 just one week after the January 2026 full moon.
So here is a photo I took about 7:00 a.m. looking west in Sarnia on January 3, 2026.
On the morning of January 3, 2026, the full Wolf Moon was in the west before sunrise, and Jupiter was very nearby in the sky, shining as a very bright object that often looks star-like to the naked eye.
Jupiter is much brighter than any star and is one of the few celestial objects visible next to the Moon in the pre-dawn sky right now.
According to sky charts for that date, the Moon and Jupiter are close together in the constellation Gemini before dawn.
According to sky charts for that date, the Moon and Jupiter are close together in the constellation Gemini before dawn.
Bright stars like Pollux or Castor in Gemini are nearby in the general region of the sky, but they are much dimmer and would be hard to see next to the glare of the full Moon. Jupiter, on the other hand, would easily stand out as the prominent “star” shown in the photo.

What is a Rotary Action Group?
Rotary Action Groups are independent entities affiliated with Rotary that each have a specific humanitarian focus, such as
• economic development
• peacebuilding
• addiction prevention
• ending modern slavery, or
• environmental sustainability
Organized by Rotary members and non-members, the groups include people around the world who have knowledge, experience, or an interest in the topic. Action group members participate in meaningful service activities and use their expertise and global networks to facilitate sustainable change.
By offering Rotary clubs and districts professional knowledge, advice about partners and funding, and guidance on the best practices and project management strategies, action groups help Rotary members plan and implement large-scale projects that make an even greater impact on critical issues in communities near and far.
Join a Rotary Action Group
Anyone who’s interested in the topic of a Rotary Action group can join one to make a difference with people who are passionate about the same cause.
In a Rotary Action Group, you can:
• Be part of a global group focused on a humanitarian issue you care about
• Participate in meaningful service activities to create positive change in the world
• Develop your own capabilities or knowledge related to a particular humanitarian focus
• Make personal and professional connections with people of action around the globe
• Share your experience and skills to help others build their expertise
To get involved, visit the individual action groups’ websites listed below or review the directory, and then contact the group you’re interested in.
You’ll need to create a My Rotary account to access the directory.
